In the city of Barcelona, the Christmas festivities begin with the Fira de Santa Llúcia or Santa Lucia Fair, it’s a Christmas market that takes place in the Cathedral of Barcelona around each year.
Even though it's not the only fair or market in the city, it is the oldest one, and that has become a tradition for Barceloneces and tourists that spend the holidays in the city. It is a beautiful plan to go and visit its joyful stalls.
In the origin, the fair began for the Santa Lucia Festivity. That’s why it begins on the 13th of December. Now days have become a Christmas market that lasts for 3 weeks. Usually ends on the 23rd, the day before Christmas Eve.
The first references that have been found about it, are from 1786. The fair has changed a lot after so many years, when the people used to go after the religious ceremony, for buying nativities and figurines made of cardboard or mud. During the XIX century, it began to have another type of stall, with dolls and things for kids. Besides this, it has kept the location for all this time.
If you visit it, you will find around 300 artisan stalls divided between the ones that sell objects directly related to the season (Christmas trees, ornaments, nativities, etc), and others with all kinds of gifts, majorly they are crafters (they sell puppets, jewellery, handkerchiefs, etc).
We recommend you, if it is possible for you, to visit the fair twice. One during the day, and another time at night. If you are able to do so, you will enjoy the beautiful charm of its stalls in each moment.
And you mustn’t forget to go by the Plaza of Sant Jaume, where each year the original, and sometimes controversial nativity scene is set up.
On one of the sides of the Plaça Nova, they usually organize children’s activities, for the little ones, and it ‘s the Tió Nadal, where children hit a tree trunk singing a popular song, until the tree trunk give them some gifts.
During the holidays, it is quite hard to find a place to stay. Each year, lots of tourists come to the city to enjoy it and spend the season here.
